EHR Alert significantly increases HPV vaccination rates

According to research in the Journal of the American Board of family medicine, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination alert reminder in doctor EHRs during a patient visit can greatly improve its rates.
HPV is crucial in helping to prevent cervical cancer. But the national vaccination rate is only 30%. Furthermore, nearly 2/3 of the patient starts the vaccination series but do not finish it.
The researchers found that if doctor received the alert during the patient visit then the results are significantly improved. Patients ages 9 to 18 were around three times more likely to start the HPV Vaccine and ten times more likely to complete the series. Patients ages from 19 to 26 were six times more likely to start and eight times more likely to complete the series.
